Meet the Students
Laura D.
I love learning...I want to know about things; it feels good to be constantly improving and achieving.
After only two days at Elmwood, Grade 6 student Laura D. already felt like she’d been here forever. “As soon as I walked in the front doors I felt at home,” she remembered. Now in her second year at Elmwood, Laura has impressed both teachers and her peers with her dedication to academics, athletics and school life.
Without question, Laura is an excellent student who regularly embraces academic challenges. She enjoys the International Baccalaureate Programme because “it inspires me to think differently.” She also said “I love learning...I want to know about things; it feels good to be constantly improving and achieving.” Her favourite subject is English and she is a voracious reader.
This year, Laura was elected to represent her class in Elmwood’s Middle School House Council. “It is really great to represent the youngest grade in House Council. I feel like I’m part of the decision-making and that I have a voice. And I’ve been able to get to know the older girls better...when I see Grade 8s in the halls they always say hi.” She also shared that school spirit is one of the things she loves most about Elmwood—the first time she took part in Spirit Day she was surprised at how everyone got involved, cheered for their Houses and showed their Elmwood pride!
Laura is also involved in arts and athletics both at Elmwood and in her spare time. She’s a member of the soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton and cross-country teams, and also belongs to the Arts Club. She plays piano and has been participating in pre-competitive gymnastics since she was two years old. She also recently qualified for the provincial championships in trampoline.
She has been inspired by several of her teachers while at Elmwood, including Ms. Tweedie, Ms. Bartlett and Ms. Wiegand, and also finds inspiration from her family, who support and encourage her. Her goal is to study hard and achieve high marks; to learn new things and reach her potential. This inspiring Grade 6 student is sure to do just that!
