Meet the Students

Emmie P.

“Elmwood is fun; challenging; full of energy; welcoming and is a great new home.”

Ask Grade 9 student Emmie P. what she loves most about Elmwood, and she has a hard time settling on just one thing. “Elmwood is fun; challenging; full of energy; welcoming and is a great new home.”

Emmie joined Elmwood in September 2009 and has quickly set about taking advantage of all the school has to offer. “I feel very fortunate to be attending Elmwood where there are so many different activities,” Emmie said. “I just wish I could manage to be involved in more!” Most would say she is doing just fine at getting involved in all aspects of school life. She joined the Field Hockey, Soccer and Rowing teams this year and participated in the Run for the Cure. She also took part in Elmwood Theatre’s production of Love and Work Enough...& More and is a member of the Cappies review team.

Emmie was also elected to represent Fry in House Council by her fellow students. “Completely new to me, the House System has opened a whole new opportunity for school spirit,” she said. “With spirit days, House Games, fundraising and special events it didn’t take long for me to feel a sense of community and pride to be a part of my newly assigned Fry House.”

She is also very busy outside of school. A competitive swimmer, Emmie is up at 4:20 a.m. most mornings to be in the water at Ottawa U. for 5:20 a.m. She especially enjoys open water swimming and this past summer completed a 3 mile swim across a choppy lake in less than 1 hour. Next summer she plans to take the last course certification she needs to become a lifeguard. She also plays the cello and recently completed the Grade 5 Royal Conservatory of Music Exam.

Though she’s still a few years away from graduating and starting a career, she is inspired by her grandmother and the path she chose. “My grandmother has always loved to study different cultures and minored in Russian History at University. Now, as a retired teacher she has relocated to Mongolia and is teaching in Ulaanbaatar,” Emmie said. “I’m inspired that she was able to take her love of teaching and love of learning about different cultures and incorporate the two into this great adventure. I hope that on graduation of University I can find a career that will allow me to travel and experience different environments and cultures as well.”

With her positive attitude, enthusiasm for learning and unwavering commitment to everything she takes on, there’s no doubt Emmie is an “Inspiring Girl.”
