By Anisha Dhalla, Grade 11

Alex V., a member of the Class of 2011, truly represents the definition of an inspiring girl at Elmwood School. She is passionate, empathetic, kind, and an excellent role model for her fellow students. Alex joined the school in grade 8 and has immensely enjoyed the all-girls environment and the extensive opportunities that Elmwood has to offer. Not only has she excelled academically throughout the years, but she has been tremendously involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities both within and outside of school.

Alex has actively participated on the school field hockey, rugby, volleyball, and soccer teams. With her strong interest in sports, it is fitting for her to be part of the athletics council this year. In addition, Alex is currently a student leader of the Duke of Edinburgh Program and has accompanied younger students on two expeditions this year as part of the requirements for the program. Outside of school, Alex is an elite competitive hockey player who has been playing since she was four years old. Her commitment and passion for hockey keeps her on the rink four to six times a week with tournaments about once a month. Over the last four years, she has shared her wide range of knowledge and skill in this sport by coaching younger competitive players.

Besides her inherent athletic ability, Alex also excels on an artistic level. She has a natural love for music and enjoys playing the trumpet and drums in the school’s Jazz Band and Concert Band.

When asked what she is inspired by, Alex has no hesitation in first saying she is inspired by her family because she believes they are similar to her and they represent what she hopes to be in the future. Alex exemplifies the model of a team player and is greatly inspired by the quote, “together everyone achieves more.” Her final inspiration is Hayley Wickenheiser, the first female Olympic hockey player.

Alex has been accepted into the Biomedical Mechanical Engineering program at Carleton University. She has also been offered a generous entrance scholarship to the university. This advanced program will keep the options of engineering, medicine, and teaching open to Alex, all careers she is destined to succeed at, given her strong determination and wide range of skills.
